In the name of Allah The Compassionate The Loving.
TAJWID

Salam alaikum wa rahmatu Allahi wa BarakatuHu.
Peace be upon the followers of guidance.

Verily the praises are for Allah, we seek His help, and ask His forgiveness,
and turn in repentance to Him, and we seek refuge in Allah from the vile of our
selves, and from the hideous of our actions. Whomsoever Allah guides, there is none
that can stray, whomsoever Allah deviates there is none that can guide. I witness
that there is no diety except Allah, and I witness that Muhammed is His worshipper and
messenger.
May Allah give us the understanding to that which He loves and pleased with,
and benefit us with what we learn, and teach us what is beneficial.
May Allah give you much pleasantness in learning the Tajwid, and that Allah
increase you much in this noble knowledge that has been passed down to us from our noble
ulema, shuyukh, and ulema through the ages all the way to prophet Muhammed (May Allah’s
peace and blessings be upon him). May Allah have compassion on all our righteous
teachers, and spread and flow this knowledge graciously to the learners all the way
till the day of judgement. May Allah give
us love for this beneficial knowledge, and make it spread pleasantly, inculcate it into
the minds, and not cause it to be forgotten. -Shaikh Sajid

Tajweed definition
What is tajweed?

Tajwīd (Arabic: تجويد‎ taǧwīd) is an Arabic word for elocution, (meaning to improve, to make better, to embellish) meaning proper pronunciation during recitation, as well as Qur'an recitation at a moderate speed. It is a set of tajweed rules which govern how the Qur'an should be read. It is derived from the triliteral root ǧ-w-d, meaning to make well, make better, or improve. Tajweed Qur’an is required by fard. There are Ten (tawātur) schools of Qur’an Recitation, the most prevalent of which is the recitation of Imam 'Asim as transmitted by Imam Hafs.
    • Tajweed of the Holy Qur'an is the knowledge and application of the rules of recitation to the reading of the Qur'an as the Prophet Mohammed pbuh, recited
    • Allah (j.s.) orders: “Pronounce the Quran carefully (with tarteel).”
    • According to verified sources the Messenger said: “Study the Quran with the Arabic melody and sounds.”
    • Tarteel (preciseness wisdom perfection) is a feature of the Quran as it is said in the ayat: “And we reveal it ayat by ayat (tarteel). (Al-Furkan.32)

At-Tarteel
What is tarteel?
Allah Ta’ala says in the Holy Qur’an:
ورَتلناه ترتيلا
“And with tarteel We have revealed it i.e. the Qur’an”
Also we have been ordered to recite the Qur’an with
tarteel; Allah Ta’ala says,
ورتل القرأن ترتيلا
“And recite the Qur’an with tarteel”
From the above two verses, it becomes obligatory
on us to recite the Qur’an with tarteel.

Tarteel vs Tajweed
Is Tajweed recitation?
What is the difference between the two?
  • Tajweed is the science of the rules of recitation of the Quran.  Reciting with tajweed means that one is applying the rules of tajweed.  A related word is “mujawwad”.
  • Tarteel means reading as the Prophet (PBUH) used to recite and as he was ordered to by Allah.  [wa rattil il-Qurana tarteela] (Muzzammil 4).   The tafsir of this aya (according to ibn kahteer) is to recite the Qur’an slowly, making the letters clear because this is an assistance in understanding and pondering the meaning of the Qur’an.  A related word is “Murattal”.
  • When asked about the meaning of Tarteel, Ali (Radhiallahu Anhu) replied, ‘It means that the Qur’an should be recited with Tajweed and with due observance to the rules of Waqf (pausing or stopping at the end of the verse).’
  • In this sense, there is no difference between the two words.
  • We will use the term Tajweed to refer to the science (the group of rules) that we wish to master in order to recite with Tarteel.
  • The most valuable learning and reciting is the one performed by carfully observing language, mind and heart. The language takes care of the accuracy of the sounds and words, mind interprets their meaning and the heart keeps their instructions, advices and warnings. So the language speaks, mind recognizes and heart receives the moral message.

ٱلَّذِينَ ءَاتَيۡنَـٰهُمُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ يَتۡلُونَهُ ۥ حَقَّ تِلَاوَتِهِۦۤ أُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِهِۦ‌ۗ

وَمَن يَكۡفُرۡ بِهِۦ فَأُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرُونَ
"Those unto whom We have given the Scripture, who read it with the right reading, those believe in it. And whoso disbelieveth in it, those are they who are the losers. (Al-Baqara, 121).
Narrated Uthman, Prophet Muhammad () said: 'The best among you are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it to others' (Sahih Al Bukhari vol 6, book 61, no. 545) Tajweed is the Science of reading Qur'an correctly. Learning how to recite the Qur'an correctly is an obligatory act upon EVERY Muslim.

Other definitions of Tajweed
Quran tajweed
    • The scientific discipline that precisely defines, elaborates and explains the principles of the proper learning of the Quran and
methodology of its practical usage is called: ‘ilmu tajweed or fennu tajweed or ahkamu tajweed or tajweed-ul-Quran which
means: science of the proper learning of the Quran.
    • One who knows tajweed rules and the method of their practical implementation and is respected among the educated
muslims in this area is called “qari”.
    • The person who learns the tajweed and teaches the others to this science is called Mujawwad (tajweed expert) and the
one who practices with beginners is called mukri’ (Quran tutoring mentor).
    • ‘Abdullah ibn Mesu’ud once said:“Improve the quality of learning the Quran and embellish it with the most beautiful sounds “.
The word tajweed is not mentioned in the Quran but there is the word TERTEEL which has the same meaning in this context.

Thank Allah, who says:

"O thou wrapped up in thy raiment! (1) Keep vigil the night long, save a little -
(2) A half thereof, or abate a little thereof (3) Or add (a little) thereto -
and chant the Qur'an in measure,
(4) For we shall charge thee with a word of weight."

(El-Muzzemmil, 1-5.)

Arabic Alphabet
The emission points of the letters, or Makhaarijul Huruf, is the study of where the sounds of the different letters are emitted from. There are 17 places, in various regions of the throat, tongue, lips, nose, as well as the mouth as a whole for the prolonged (Mudd) letters.
Emission points of the letters - place of articulation.
The emission points of the letters or Makhaarijul Huruf is the study of where the sounds of the different letters are emitted from. There are 17 places in various regions of the throat tongue lips nose as well as the mouth as a whole for the prolonged (Mudd) letters.
Characteristics of the letters - manner of articulation.
The characteristics of the letters or Siffat al Huruf refer to the different attributes of the letters. Western phoneticians call this the
Some of the characteristics have opposites while some are individual. An example of a characteristic would be the whistling (Safeer) which is an attribute sound of air escaping from a tube. Western phoneticians call this whistling characteristic fricative.
Rules of the letter NUN and tanween
The NUN sakinah and tanween (vowels that produces a "nnn" sound immediately after it) can be pronounced in four different ways: Clear (Idhar))(ء،ه،ع ،ح،غ،خ) Merged with the next letter (Idgham) Hidden (Ikhfa) and changed from a "nnn" sound to a "mmm" sound (Iqlaab).
Rules of the letter MIM
The MIM sakinah can be pronounced in three different ways clear (Idhar) prolonged nasalization (Ghunnah) and uncloselipped (ikhfaa shafawee).
Rules of prolongation [muddud]
These rules refer to the number of beats that are pronounced when voweled letter is followed by a MUDD letter. The MUDD letters are Alif Yaah and Waw. The number of beats can range from 2 counts ordinarily. 4 or 5 counts when there is a Hamzah (ء) and the maximum six counts when it is followed by a shaddah.
Rules of the letter LAM
The Arabic word for "the" is al- (the letters alif and lam). The lam in al- is pronounced if the letter after is "qamariyya" (lunar) but silent if the letter after is "shamsiyya" (solar).
Qalqalah
The five qalqalah letters are قطبج and د. Qalqalah literally meaning unrest is the vibration or bouncing sound of a letter whose vowel sound was cancelled by a sukūn or šaddah.[1] The lesser vibration occurs when the qalqalah letter is in the middle of a word or is at the end of the word but is joined to the word after it in continuous recitation.[1] The moderate vibration is when the qalqalah letter is at the end of the word but does not have a šaddah.[1] The greater vibration is when the qalqalah letter is at the end of the word and has a šaddah.[1]
Thickness and Thinness of the letters
Some of the Arabic letters are always pronounced thick with a heavy accent (Tafkhim). Some letters are pronounced thin with a light accent (Tarqeeq). The first category of letters are called "mufakham" the latter "muraqqaq". Some letters depend on the scenario and are sometimes pronounced thick and sometimes thin.

How to read the Quran?
learn quran tajweed

The ideal way in which to learn how to read with Tajweed is under the guidance of a qualified teacher
we at least start to gain an understanding of the rules and make an effort to self correct our reading through listening to renowned recitors such as Sheikh Abdullah Basfar Sheikh Al Husari and Sheikh Al Hudaifi
Instructions
  1. Perform "wudu" or ablution, which is washing parts of your body to cleanse yourself before you handle or recite the Quran. You are also required to wear clean clothes.
  2. Learn the rules of Tajweed. You need to learn the letters of the Arabic alphabet and understand how to pronounce them correctly. The sound will vary depending on whether it's emitted from the throat, palate, tongue or mouth. Some letters require shortening and others elongating. You need to understand the articulation points and have a knowledge of the characteristics of the letters (see Resources below)
  3. Locate a Quran teacher, who will help you by listening to your pronunciation and guiding you on how to become more proficient. You can find a teacher by inquiring at your local mosque or Islamic center, where Tajweed courses are often run.
  4. Practice and repeat as much as possible. The traditional method of learning involves listening to a verse followed by exact repetition. Have the Quran open and focus on the text as you listen to the pronunciation by the teacher, who will then pause to allow you to repeat.
  5. Listen to the Quran in Arabic. This will help you to memorize verses of the Quran. Listen to teachers who recite at a slow pace, allowing you to distinguish the different rules of Tajweed being applied. You can download the Quran from the "Quran Reciter" (see Resources below) and listen on your laptop, cell phone or iPod.
  6. Read the quran in english (your native language) in order to understand the meaning of the Qur'an
